How to Overgrip a Padel Racket
You surely have observed that all professional padel players use an overgrip during competitions and even during training sessions, which shows the importance of them. Let’s discover the benefits of the overgrip and what is the best way to put one on your padel racket.
Why Use an Overgrip:
Having a padel overgrip is very important for several reasons:
- Comfort: It just makes the racket’s handle feel more comfortable. It helps prevent a slippery feel when hitting the ball as it enhances feel, cushioning, and traction. It also increases sweat absorption and keeps your grip dry.
- Hygiene and injury prevention: No doubt that changing the overgrip frequently is hygienic. Holding a racket with a new clean overgrip can only be sanitary. Overgrips are also a way to prevent hand blisters.
- Protection of the base grip: It’s essential to preserve the grip base by overgrips, as the main grip of your padel racket is more expensive and more complicated to change.
- Customize grip size: You can adjust the size of your grip by adding overgrips. You can apply more than one overgrip to make the grip feel larger, or if you use only one overgrip, you can decide to make it tight or loose to find your favourite grip size.
- Mental/Aesthetic reasons: It’s just satisfying to play with a new overgrip. It will give you this feeling of being ready to play your best game. If you’re not playing well, it’s easy to blame a dirty overgrip. A new overgrip can be a mental boost that you don’t have any excuses, and it’s time to shine on the court. Also, some players enjoy changing the design of their padel racket. An overgrip is a nice way to do it.
When to Change an Overgrip?
It depends on the level of practice and the duration of use. Professional players change their overgrip even one or two times during a tournament match for ultimate performance, while intermediate-level players can keep it for two or three padel sessions.
There are some indicators that you can rely on to know if your overgrip has to be changed. These indicators are related to the look (a change of colour, the appearance of some dirt/use marks, scratches …) or to the feel (the lack of tackiness, slippery feel, wet overgrip …).
It is also nice to change your padel overgrip before a tournament or an important game. It’s good mental preparation.
How to Choose your Overgrip?
Overgrips come in a variety of types, textures, and thicknesses to satisfy all types of padel players. Padel overgrips are available in different thicknesses as well as varying absorption, tackiness and softness levels.
An overgrip will always be a source of comfort. Be sure to have one and install it properly to have the best results.

Change an Overgrip: Step-by-Step Guide
Needed items: your padel racket, an overgrip, scissors, a pen, and a ruler.
1. Remove the old overgrip from your racket.
2. Remove the grip band of the racket and tie the wrist strap.
3. Unwrap the new overgrip and prepare the grip tape for later.

4. Apply the tape at the end of the overgrip to the edge of the butt cap.

5. Start gripping from the butt cap at the bottom of the racket to the end of the handle. For more precision, rotate the racket slowly. Be sure to have parallel lines for a same thickness all over the handle. If you mess up, you can start over, and you can make it tight or loose according to what you prefer.

6. When you reach the top of the handle, make a mark at the point where your overgrip meets the end of the handle.

7. Continue wrapping it until the bottom of the grip meets your first mark, and make another mark.

8. Put the grip on a flat surface and draw a line connecting the two marks, then make a straight cut across.

9. Finish wrapping the grip and use the grip tape at the top.

10. Open the tie in the strap, and put back the grip band around the finishing tape.
